Oreo Cows!

One thing I love to do when I am over near Fearrington Village is to stop and see the Belted Galloway cows, or as some like to call them, the oreo cows! So after Red and I had walked around their pond and moved past his fear of the scary stone sheep, I thought we would head over to see the cows, since Red had never seen them other than from the window of the car.

As we approached the cows, Red got pretty excited, sniffing the air and picking up the lovely aroma of cow poo.

This big guy was in a field by himself, and came right up to the fence in order to check Red and I out.

It was then as the cow approached the fence, getting closer to us that Red realized the massive size difference between himself and the cows, and the fear set in! Haha! He made Red pretty nervous, as he was curious about Red as well, and I think Red just didn't know what to make of him! LOL

With his tail tucked and ears down, Red slowly inched closer to the cow...

Please don't hurt me, please don't hurt me...

I am a pancake, just be a pancake, if I make myself as flat as possible the cow will not eat me! Oh I want to sniff you so bad...Hello Nice Mr. Cow, I come in peace!

::big happy sigh of relief:: Nice cow did not eat me!

Once Red's curiosity with the nice cow was settled, we walked over to the adjacent field where there was a whole herd of cows and a lone donkey. As I understand it there are 3 donkeys who call Fearrington home, who are there to make visitors smile and to provide protection from predators for the cows. I don't quite know what type of predators or how a donkey protects the cows, but this is what I was told.

As Red and I approached the fence, the donkey made a bee line straight for us, clearly wanting to make sure we were not some shady characters there to do any cownapping, haha!

Donkey: Identification please, and state the purpose for your visit!

Well I was just curious if you might have any spare cow caca laying around I might have? I heard from The Mafiosos that it is an amazingly tasty delicacy, and I wanted to give it a try.

Oh, I think I see some right there...if you could just nudge it over here to me I would be so grateful!

I so wish I had captured what happened next, because it was so hysterically funny! Right as Red got brave enough to lean his head over the railing, the donkey blew a giant sneeze right at Red, and Red was so startled by it that he basically levitated straight up into the air and landed about a foot back from the fence! Hahaha!

The donkey then turned and left Red with this amazing view as his parting gift, haha!

Poor Red, he never did get to try any caca...

Nice ass for a donkey. Red, I think you should stick with your own kind. You don't want to mess with farm animals. Woof, Tank

Poor Red--what with missing out on cow caca and all. It's nice to know he has levitation superpowers. With his doggles and a cape, he could be the next superhero dog!

Poor Red, Sparky says cows aren't scary and they're fun to bark at! He suggests Red gives it a go next time.

I don't, cross cows scare me, even if they don't scare Sparky.

What a cool day! I'm thinking it might be a good thing he never got ahold of any cowpies!

Erm... donkeys kick, bite and strike (front feet kicking) predators such as coyotes and wolves. Donkeys are hard core. Please do not be sticking your oh-so-crunchable head through the fence to say hi to donkeys. They're not always so polite as to sneeze and leave.

Source: Uncle owns donkeys to guard his cattle from predators. Donkeys killed his last farm dog after living with said farm dog for 3 years, and have killed several coyotes that he knows of.
Conclusion: Donkeys and dogs should not mix.

Oh Red you are a very brave dog! I don't know if I would be trying to kiss any cows or donkeys!

@Anonymous: Thanks for the info on donkeys, I never knew they were such good livestock guardians! That was the only time Red was able to get a chance to breach the fence barrier because I was trying to hold him and take a picture, so I will definitely be very careful on any future trips to make sure Red's head is no where near the crunchable range of the donkey :)
